WHY DEMOCRACY? Re-release
In collaboration with 48 broadcasters, reaching a total of181 countries, THE WHY launched WHY DEMOCRACY? in October 2007- a series of 10documentary films dedicated to exploring contemporary democracy and itsunderlying values.
Democracy is arguably still the greatest political buzzwordof our time and is invoked by political leaders, corporations and citizensalike– but what does it mean? Can it be defined, measured, safeguarded? Can itbe sold, bought, and transplanted? Can it grow? Can it die? What does it meanto people who can’t even talk about it? What does it mean to people who don’tbelieve in it? And what does it mean to you?
These are the questions that the WHY DEMOCRACY? filmsexplore, showing scenes of children participating in a democratic election forthe first time in China to exposing the true meaning of revolution for thepeople of Bolivia. In a time where fledgling democracies look to more developedsystems that are now experiencing the dualism and polarity of mass politicalparticipation, these films are more relevant than ever in helping us understandthat the right of citizens to engage acts as the foundation for economic andsocial development- in spite of any inevitable obstacles.
The films will be released online over the coming months and can be watched on our website and YOUTUBE channel.
